Resumen

VIVAS, Lívia. Postcolonialism and identity in the caribbean literature in english: memory and self-representation in Jamaica Kincaid’s writing. Diacrítica [online]. 2012, vol.26, n.2, pp.446-468. ISSN 0807-8967.

This article addresses the relationships between postcolonialism and identity and takes as a parameter for analysis the Caribbean region. Most of these small island states experienced a long process of colonization and their tardy independence caused a new kind of neocolonial exploitation. This in turn created a vulnerable situation for those countries, despite their dependence on the hegemonic nations, particularly North-America and Europe. This analysis focuses on the issues inherent to the English Caribbean, whose postcolonial literature was named Commonwealth Literature or New Writing in English. The proposed reflection will be made through the voices of Caribbean writers, particularly Jamaica Kincaid, and the critical discourses of postcolonial authors.

Palabras clave : Caribbean; culture; identity; literature; postcolonialism.
