Abstract

PEREIRA, Margarida Esteves. This is England?: England and its identities through the lens of the Heritage Film in the panorama of cultural tourism. Diacrítica [online]. 2013, vol.27, n.3, pp.301-318. ISSN 0807-8967.

This paper aims to discuss a film genre that has been debated in the context of British film (but not only), the ‘heritage film’, focusing on how it has projected a particular image of England and of English society. We intend to question the projection for the world of a specific image of English identity founded on the nostalgic idea of the Empire. In this sense, focus will be on the way many of the films produced or co-produced in England in the last thirty to forty years make use of the country’s cultural heritage (architectural, natural, historical), perpetuating a certain nostalgic idea of what English identity is and helping to promote this idea of the country abroad, something that is also utilized by the tourism industry.

Keywords : heritage film; identity; England; cultural tourism.
