This article presents some considerations on the frontier between calão de fora and calão de terra/dentro, concepts taken from artisanal fishermen from the community of Baiacu, Vera Cruz, Bahia. Under the perspective of the Conceptual Metaphor Theory developed by Lakoff and Johnson (1980 [2002]) and followers, it is argued that the concepts may be included in the principle of prototypicality and applied to the conceptual categories of metaphor and metonymy.The aim is to provide evidence for the concepts calão de fora and calão de terra/dentro as an important linguistic function, with complex meaning, based on what artisanal fishermen from this community understand as meaning: whether it reflects the reality based on the objective world, dissociated from what people observe and experience, or whether it reflects conceptual structures based on the experience. In this sense, it is a work whose indicative nature may primarily suggest, as it is the author’s interest, to be directed to the conditions under which things take place rather than to things themselves. The methodology used is based on prototype categorization and MIP (Metaphor Identification Procedure). This procedure is not an explanatory model, symmetrical and unique, but a position from which one may look at the data and theoretically accommodate them.
