Abstract

MUXIKA, Kepa Larrea. The treatment of humour in the methods used for teaching the basque language to adults. Diacrítica [online]. 2014, vol.28, n.1, pp.319-346. ISSN 0807-8967.

Apparently, there seems to be no room for humour in teaching. The truth is, however, just the opposite, since a big dose of humour is necessary to face the learning of a second language. In this work we analyse if using humour in teaching Basque is an educational resource itself or just fulfills an extra function in order to motivate students. We start from the following hypothesis: humour is present, one way or another, in most aspects of life, even in the most dramatic situations (black humour). Consequently, humour used in teaching can develop the same functions and have similar characteristics to what is used in other social situations. The study of the use of humour in teaching Basque to adults is focused on the analysis of the teaching methods starting from the grammatical methods, followed by the direct and structuralist methods and ending up in the communicative approach.
