The article aims to analyze the media coverage of the Carnation Revolution in the two German States. Articles of the German newspapers Die Zeit and Neues Deutschland between 25th of April and Spinola’s Resignation in the end of September will be analyzed in the frame of the political agenda of both German states. Considering the fact that the military overthrow in Lisbon came by surprise for external political observers, the media coverage gain importance in the analyses of foreign policy towards the new Portuguese situation. Furthermore, the media coverage is a case in point to understand how difficult it was for foreign reporters to relate to the Portuguese situation in 1974. Besides, the comparison of two German newspapers on both sides of the Iron Curtain offers some interesting side view on the Carnation Revolution, especially on the colonial question and the beginning of the democratic process.
