Abstract
NEVES, Márcia Seabra. Gonçalo M. Tavares, Leitor de Michel Foucault: Loucura e Animalidade. Diacrítica [online]. 2014, vol.28, n.2, pp.225-240. ISSN 0807-8967.
The disturbing relationship of mankind with its lost or repressed animality has acquired renewed pertinence in western thought in the last decades, in the course of which philosophers and writers have insistently scrutinized and reflected upon the animal essence of human beings. Even without having dealt with animality in a specific work, Michel Foucault is certainly one of the 20th century philosophers that closer attention has devoted to it, seeking to examine it not in terms of opposition to the concept of humanity, but rather as a limit-experience of the human proper. In his groundbreaking Histoire de la folie à l’âge classique (1961), Foucault draws on this negative dimension of animality to look into madness and power relations during specific historical moments of western culture. In this article, we seek to provide a critical interpretation of animalescos (2013) by Gonçalo M. Tavares in the light of Michel Foucault philosophical propositions, specifically those pertaining to the interplay between madness and animality.
