MATA, Inocência. The tales of Luuanda as 'angolan fables': disjunctions and convergence. Diacrítica [online]. 2014, vol.28, n.3, pp.31-50. ISSN 0807-8967.

This article discusses the confluence among Angolan fables, and the writing of Luuanda, a collection of short stories by Luandino Vieira. The proposed argument highlights the elfish nature of all these narrative forms, which share pedagogic aims and induce moral and philosophical reflections, perpetuating ancestor wisdom passed on from generation to generation. Beyond their established literary quality, these short stories amount to a repository of elements from oral Angolan culture (misoso e maka) and they capture a memory of everyday life in the musseque neighbourhoods of Luanda as metaphors of Angolan national identity. In the colonial context of the 1950s-1960s and 1970s, Luuanda also stands as an example of the power of words and of the writer in the process of promoting form of awareness while recovering, strategically, elements of the repressed local culture. Finally, the writing of a ‘oralité feinté’, noticeable in these tales, is a defining feature of Angolan fiction since the 19th century.
