Abstract

IBARRA, Noelia  and  BALLESTER, Josep. Building identity through intercultural adoption in contemporary children’s and young adult literature. Diacrítica [online]. 2014, vol.28, n.3, pp.103-120. ISSN 0807-8967.

The appearance of multiculturalism as a topic in Children’s and Young Adult Literature of the last decades can be traced along many titles through different approaches, themes, or characters with specific traits. One of these themes is becoming noticeable: child adoption. The growing fascination for this theme lies in the role of literature - literary education included - as builder, preserver, and creator of collective and self-identity. Firstly, our research aims to demonstrate the growing interest for this recently popular theme in literature intended for children; secondly, to explain the context in which the theme has spread; and lastly, to analyse from a critical standpoint a set of representative texts related to one of the most common binomials: history-identity.

Keywords : Identity; Children’s and Young Adult Literature; Literary and Intercultural Education; Adoption.
