Abstract

ESTEVES, Elisa Nunes. Heroic Figures in Horto do Esposo. Diacrítica [online]. 2014, vol.28, n.3, pp.171-180. ISSN 0807-8967.

In Horto do Esposo there is an abundance of small stories of exemplary nature starring characters with a heroic profile. Given the nature of the work and the eminently didactic vocation of its writing, it is only logical that the doctrinal discourse rests on credible arguments and prestigious examples. Thus the frequent use of short narratives marked by the liveliness of the adventures and the excellence of its heroes. Many of them are kings, with a specific configuration in the vast world of heroes: they combine epic values with spiritual qualities. We propose to present a brief study on the specifics of the heroic figures in Horto and the morphology of their adventures, remembering the anonymous Cistercian prose writer of the end of the 14th century, who was taken by "the pleasure of narrating" (Rossi, 1979).

Keywords : Horto do Esposo; heroes; exempla; adventure.
