Resumen
SWIATKIEWICZ, Teresa Fernandes y BATOREO, Hanna J.. We translate word order? The topicalization of the direct object in polish-portuguese translation. Diacrítica [online]. 2015, vol.29, n.1, pp.5-26. ISSN 0807-8967.
The present study focuses on topicalization structures in translations from Polish into Portuguese based on a corpus of data collected from the Portuguese translation by Zbigniew Wódkowski of the Polish novel Tommaso del Cavaliere by Julian Stryjkowski. Both Polish and Portuguese are pro-drop languages and its basic sen- tence order is SVO, but because of its rich morphology Polish (like Slavic lan- guages in general) has very flexible word order, which causes syntactic dilemmas in translation into Portuguese. Mostly Polish OVS and OSV structures are rendered as canonical Portuguese SVO constructions but topicalization can also be used in its specifically Portuguese construction known as Clitic Left Dislocation. Our aim is to explain its use in our corpus in the light of Descriptive Translation Studies.
