This research aims to contribute to the semantic and pragmatic description of parenthetical clauses introduced by ‘como' in contemporary European Portuguese. The analysis of the empirical data is developed within a discourse coherence framework. The outcome of the research is a typology where three main classes are sketeched: (i) examplification clauses, (ii) epistemic comment clauses and (iii) reportive clauses. Classes (i) and (ii) involve the discourse relations Elaboration (through examplification) and Comment, while class (iii) can only be characterized in terms of evidentiality.
