Abstract

BARREIRO, Sofia. Some notes on verb inflectional morphology in agrammatism. Diacrítica [online]. 2015, vol.29, n.1, pp.261-296. ISSN 0807-8967.

Production (and, in some cases, comprehension) of verb inflectional morphology has been reported to be impaired in agrammatic aphasia by a large number of studies across several languages. Studies suggest a highly selective pattern of impairment: the grammatical categories of tense and aspect are better preserved than subject-verb agreement and mood. Different explanations have been formulated to account for the pattern. Data and theoretical accounts presented so far, however, are questionable. In this paper, we briefly review existent literature on production and comprehension of verb inflectional morphology in agrammatism. We then present some notes on it, as we highlight problems and unanswered questions in the research field. The discussion allows us to identify topics for future research.

Keywords : aphasia; agrammatism; verb inflection; tense and aspect; processing deficit.
