Abstract

CASTRO, Ivo. Portuguese «new orthography» is 25 years old. Diacrítica [online]. 2015, vol.29, n.1, pp.498-507. ISSN 0807-8967.

1911 orthographic reform is by far the most successful the Portuguese language has had so far. Wisely supported by a theory that tried to conciliate conservatism with modernization, it was quickly put in operation and aimed at facilitating the access to reading and writing of new numbers of literate masses. Every later attempt at normatization, in the Portuguese domain, compares poorly in terms of quality and success. The «new orthography», so called in spite of its 25 years, is better than most, but it is still waiting to be generally implemented, due to a hazardous political management.

Keywords : Portuguese language; orthography; graphemics.
