Abstract
FONTINHA, I. Rute and SALTA, M. Manuela. Performance of metallic components in buildings . Corros. Prot. Mater. [online]. 2007, vol.26, n.3, pp.86-91. ISSN 0870-1164.
Metallic materials are widely applied in components of buildings like: facades, roofing, plumbing, fixings. The most used metals are steel, aluminium, zinc, copper and, recently, stainless steel. However, some problems may occur in these components, caused by improper material selection or design for the intended service. In this paper, determinant parameters for the corrosion of the metallic components used in the buildings are focused and some corrosion cases, occurred in pipes, window frames and roofs of different metals, are presented. Additionally, some metals characteristics and design and installation factors that could lead to improved durability of metallic components used in buildings are pointed out.
