Abstract

BRUNO, Sonia; ZAPPONI, Mónica; LAZZARINO, Héctor Andrés  and  PEDRAZA, Juan Pablo. Evaluation of Weathering in Coil Coated Products. Corros. Prot. Mater. [online]. 2008, vol.27, n.2, pp.40-46. ISSN 0870-1164.

High performance coated products are required in Argentina considering of the wide variety of climatic conditions they have to resist. Evaluation of weathering resistance is performed through outdoor testing, but this evaluation takes too much time. The aim of this work is to study degradation mechanisms for polyester topcoats and to correlate physical and chemical changes in natural and accelerated weathering so that shorter performance testing can be successfully applied. Infra red techniques were employed for chemical changes detection. FTIR analysis showed weathering in polyesters is due to photo oxidation and polymer hydrolysis, with water absorption and hydroxy groups formation. This methodology could be used for early detection of failures and could become a useful aid for accelerated tests predicting performance in service.

Keywords : Coil Coating; Photolytically Induced Radiation; FTIR; Polyester Paints.
