NOBRE, Silvana R.; RODRIGUEZ, Luiz C. E.; SILVEIRA, Luiz E. S.  y  SIMOES, Gustavo D. O.. Componentes Básicos de um Modelo Relacional de Dados para a Gestão Florestal. Silva Lus. [online]. 2004, vol.12, n.Especial, pp.103-117. ISSN 0870-6352.

Forest resource managers deal with a large amount of data to support their decisions. Forestry operations produce data that are continuously stored in data banks, creating flows of information that must be comprehended to be adequately managed. Information technology experts, to organise, maintain and provide good services to clients of this information, build models representing the real world. This task is not trivial when treating forestry issues, and several models and patterns have been suggested. One of the most widely used model technique is the relational model. In an initial phase, abstract concepts are created to result in an entity-relationship (E-R) figure. In this paper we apply a special set of concepts to model part of the real world of a forest company dedicated to the production of wood. Four realities are presented to create a modelling exercise: (i) history of cycles and rotations of a forest management unit is modelled by the concept of "existence tendencies"; (ii) the characterisation of a forest management unit according to soil type, for instance, is modelled by relational patterns called "generalisation"; (iii) stratification criteria and the forest management units are modelled according to relational patterns called "conceptual"; and (iv) silvicultural interventions are modelled with the help of "aggregations" and "generalizations". It is shown that the logical structures presented in this paper can be used to build a flexible and practical forest data model.
