Abstract

MADRIGAL, J. et al. Short-Term Response of Post Fire Regeneration in Pinus pinaster Ait. Forest to Very Heavy Mechanical of Seedlings. Silva Lus. [online]. 2004, vol.12, n.1, pp.1-14. ISSN 0870-6352.

A Pinus pinaster stand, affected by a wildfire in 1992, was selected in 1999 in "Monte Fraguas" (Guadalajara, Central Spain), in order to study the effect on pine seedling growth and cone number per seedling of two different heavy pine seedling mechanical thinning and brush clearing. Results for two years following treatment are presented. Growth of stem diameters, at groundline and at 50 cm of height; and crown diameter, were significantly greater on thinning plots that on the control ones. Two years post-treatment results showed that the thinning plots significantly increased the groundline stem diameter growth in 76% whereas on the control only 31% was observed. The crown width of the thinning seedlings significantly expanded in 40%, whereas 15% was detected on the control ones. Cone number per seedling on treated plots was significantly greater that on the control ones. As regards total height, growth was significantly lower (18%) in treated seedlings than in the control ones, in the first year, but this effect was not observed in the second year.

Keywords : maritime pine; wildfire; management; dendrometrical variables.
