Abstract
VIEGAS, Domingos X.; REIS, Raul M.; CRUZ, Miguel G. and VIEGAS, Maria T.. Calibration of Canadian Fire Danger Rating System for Application to Portugal. Silva Lus. [online]. 2004, vol.12, n.1, pp.77-93. ISSN 0870-6352.
The Canadian Fire Weather System is briefly described and the meaning of each one of its components is given. Data from direct field measurements of fine fuel moisture content in Central Portugal were used to establish predictors of moisture content of litter and of shrub vegetation. The ability of ISI to predict rate of spread in shrub vegetation is shown. The methodology to calibrate the fire danger classes based on the statistical data of daily FWI, number of fires and burned area for each district of Continental Portugal is presented. It is shown that the average value of the Drought Code (DC) is a good indicator of the relative danger of a fire season.
