Abstract

CHEBOUTI-MEZIOU, Nadjba; CHEBOUTI, Yahia  and  DOUMANDJI, Salaheddine. Attacks of Chaetoptelius vestitus (Mulsant & Rey) (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) to Pistacia vera L. in the Western-High Plains of Algeria (Tlemcen). Silva Lus. [online]. 2011, vol.19, n.Especial, pp.11-17. ISSN 0870-6352.

Damage caused by Chaetoptelius vestitus in an orchard of Pistacia vera located in the semi-arid steppe of Eastern Tlemcen was found to result from the reproductive activity of female beetles, while laying their eggs and making the reproductive tunnels in the young shoots of the year. The action of this xylophagous insect can cause the fall of the fruit and a consequent decrease in the yield of pistachio. A single individual insect may affect several young trees. The survey and quantification of the breeding galleries have enabled to detect a close relationship between the density of attack and the average length of the gallery. Furthermore, it was found that the density of attack varies according to the different exposure of the branches in the tree.

Keywords : Semi-arid region; Chaetoptelius vestitus; Pistacia vera; gallery; attack density; branch exposure.
