Abstract

The Portuguese territory, where forests occupy over a third of its land, presents a considerable potential for forestry-related activities. Currently, the Portuguese forestry sector continues to be stated as a form of strategic wealth, whose need for preservation and development gathers a national consensus. This paper offers a particulardefinition of the forest industry and describes some of its challenges, related to environmental issues in management, particularly with regard to CO2 emissionsand the growing need for product certification. The central challenge for the Portuguese forestry remains one of assuring a sustainable use of its natural resources, including its potential in agro-forestry, by taking full advantage of theendogenous benefits of an abundant resource.
