Abstract

REBELO, Luís. Brief treatment of tobaco dependence: Practical Application of the «5As» and the «5Rs». Rev Port Clin Geral [online]. 2011, vol.27, n.4, pp.356-361. ISSN 0870-7103.

It is essential that the family doctor be prepared to intervene with all tobacco users. If the smoker is motivated to quit, the physician must use the five components of a brief intervention (5 “As”) - ask, advise, assess, assist and arrange. For the patient unwilling to quit, a motivational counseling intervention is needed using the “5 Rs” - relevance, risks, rewards, roadblocks and repetition. Brief treatment of tobacco dependence is effective. Family doctors have a key role to play in this area. This method must be spread and trained.

Keywords : Tobacco; Brief Intervention.
