Early intervention is aimed at families and children. It must therefore promote the development of the child, as well as provide global support to the family. According to the ecosystemic perspective, these concerns must be integrated in the life contexts of families. Putting these types of approaches in practice is not easy and even in countries such as the United States of America studies have identified discrepancies between professionals' perceptions of what are ideal practices and their real practices (Bailey, 1994). And in Portugal, what is happening? Using empirical data, we will discuss and characterise the current situation of early intervention in Portugal.
