The recent publication in France of a plan of action for children with language problems is not without risks. After a brief description of the debates surrounding dyslexia, we examine their political context, focusing both on arguments based on a biological approach and arguments favouring an emphasis on social and pedagogical factors. We conclude by demonstrating that this problem concerns reading in general and is international, by indicating other ways of solving it, and by identifying, from a sociological perspective, two categories of reading difficulties with different origins.
