The aim of this study was to analyse the relations between the development of metalinguistic competences and reading acquisition through different methods, in the first year of school. Two groups of 19 alphabetised children, one group through the phonemic method and the other through the syllabic method, were assessed throughout the year in tasks of syllabic awareness, phonemic awareness, knowledge of the name of letters and reading. The results show that the pattern of development of phonologic competences is identical in both methods, and that through the syllabic method both the syllabic awareness and the phonemic awareness become more developed. This study confirmed the results of previous studies, which identified a strong relation between the development of these competences and reading. The data supports the idea that both syllabic and phonemic awareness are important for success in reading acquisition in Portuguese. The analysis of the results suggests that the syllabic method avoids the increase of the influence of individual differences in terms of syllabic and phonemic awareness on reading performance, whereas the phonemic method accentuates the effect of these differences. The results seem to indicate that knowledge of the name of letters plays an important role in success in reading, throughout the year and independently of the method used.
