This main goal of this research is to characterize reading motivation in students of the three compulsory basic cycles of education in Portugal. Participants were 1405 Portuguese students of the 3rd grade to the 9th grade. They completed a reading motivation measuring scale. This instrument considers five reading motivational domains: Enjoyment, Importance/Curiosity, Social Reasons, Social Recognition and Self-perception of Competence. Results show an inverse effect of grade level in reading motivation, with students of ealier grades being more motivated than students of later grades in almost all of the dimensions of the reading motivation scale, except for the Self-perception of Competence, where scores increased from the 1st to the 2nd cycle. Significant differences were also found between boys and girls in reading motivation, with girls expressing more positive motivational characteristics than boys.
