CARVALHO, Joana et al. Scaffolding verbal materno no âmbito de uma tarefa de elicitação narrativa em crianças de idade pré-escolar. []. , 30, 4, pp.359-371. ISSN 0870-8231.

Scaffolding has been mostly studied during problem solving tasks. Research in the context of narrative elicitation is still scarce. The present investigation analyzes maternal verbal scaffolding aimed at promoting preschoolers’ narrative construction using a picture book. The narratives of 41 four-year-olds (58.5% boys) and their mothers’ were videotaped, transcribed and analyzed according to the Coding System of Verbal Behaviors that Promote Preschoolers’ Narratives. Mothers used different verbal behaviors to promote and support their children’s narrative construction. Specifically, mothers direct children’s attention and interest to the book; use specific questions to orient children’s discourse; make use of examples and confirmation requests; and provide open and closed questions with encouragements in order to promote children’s discourse. Similar values of intrusiveness, sensitivity and change levels were found. These results suggest that mothers tend to participate as co-authors or principal narrators in order to support children’s narrative construction.
