The quality of parental care in the context of early relationships has been identified as critical to children’s development. In the present article we present the typology of parenting styles proposed by Baumrind and the impact of parenting styles on child development. In the second part of the paper we explore the concepts of attachment relationship, secure-base and parental sensitivity, as well as the research focusing on the impact of attachment on social development. Finally, we highlight the common points between these two domains of parenting, the studies about attachment and parenting styles and we raise some questions about future research.
