Early adverse experiences, particularly shaming experiences may function as traumatic memories and be central to formation of self-identity. This paper aims to analyse the dimensional structure and psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of the Centrality of Event Scale (CES) for adolescents. Participants were 397 adolescents with ages ranging between 12 and 18 years old, attending public schools. These adolescents filled out the CES and other self-report measures which assess psychopathology symptoms and perception of current feelings of internal and external shame. Results revealed that the CES has a good internal reliability, an adequate temporal stability and a one-dimensional structure. The centrality of shame experiences was positively correlated with psychopathological symptoms and with current feelings of shame. These findings suggest that the CES in its version for adolescents is a useful and robust tool to the assessment of centrality of shame memories in adolescence.
