Abstract

SILVA, E. et al. Revestimentos autolubrificantes de ZrCN para ferramentas de corte. C.Tecn. Mat. [online]. 2009, vol.21, n.1-2, pp.34-44. ISSN 0870-8312.

The coatings technology is nowadays widely used in engineering areas. The excellent results in various fields of applications, (from the technologies of manufacturing and machining to the most demanding applications such as tribological ones) have increased the interest on coating materials with more complex structures including micro- and nanostructured materials. In response to this growing challenge, this paper describes how  ZrCN coatings were deposited by reactive magnetron sputtering and investigated with a focus on the mechanical properties such as hardness, Young’s modulus and tribological behaviour. Turning tests were conducted in order to evaluate the applicability of ZrCN for cutting operations using the following parameters: Vc=200m/min; a= 0.1mm/rot; f=1mm in a commercial steel EN 30 CrNiMo 8. An analysis of the elementary composition of the coatings deposited with varying parameters suggested a classification depending on the Zr content in the coating: Zone I, II and III with CZr > 60 at.%, 45 > CZr > 60 at.% and CZr < 40 at.%, respectively. According to X-ray diffraction measurements crystalline phases of ZrN are formed, whereas a tendency to form a more amorphous structure due to the formation of a ZrCN solid solution with increasing C content was observed as well. The mechanical properties of the coatings showing the formation of this solid solution are superior. In term of tribological behaviour the best performance was obtained with the coatings having a low Zr content.
