Resumen

LOURO, Henriqueta; BORGES, Teresa  y  SILVA, Maria João. Manufactured nanomaterials: New challenges for public health. Rev. Port. Sau. Pub. [online]. 2013, vol.31, n.2, pp.145-157. ISSN 0870-9025.  https://doi.org/10.1016/j.rpsp.2012.12.004.

The manufactured nanomaterials (NM) have specific physicochemical properties that confer unique mechanical, optical, electrical and magnetic characteristics that are beneficial for biomedical and industrial applications. However, the exponential developments of nanotechnologies contrast with the still insufficient risk assessment for human health and the environment, leading to concerns in terms of public health. This review summarizes the current knowledge on the toxicity of NM, identifying remaining gaps and describing the contribution of nanotoxicology to the regulatory framework of NM, in order to ensure their safe use and reduction of risks to public health.

Palabras clave : Manufactured nanomaterials; Public health; Safety; Genotoxic effects; Nanotoxicology.
