Abstract

GONZALEZ-MORALES*, M.; FERNANDEZ-POZO, L.; URBANO, I. Gago, J.  and  RODRIGUEZ, Mª.A.. Vegetation indices and climatic variables for the evaluation of ecosystem services as a model for the management of protected natural areas. Rev. de Ciências Agrárias [online]. 2022, vol.45, n.4, pp.41-50.  Epub Dec 01, 2022. ISSN 0871-018X.  https://doi.org/10.19084/rca.28375.

Ensuring and promoting environmental sustainability is one of the main objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. However, factors such as extractive and cultural activities and even climate change are the main causes of pressure that determine the state of the territory. It is important to have tools that inform us about the degree of achievement of the objectives set, as well as the identification of impacts and their consequences to be able to carry out a management that maintains or increases the biodiversity and other resources of the area. In a protected area in the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula, where an important mining activity took place, we have analyzed the variation of a vegetation index (NDVI), climatic variations and the state of soils in a protected area in the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula as tools for sustainable management. The results show the impact that extractive activity and climatic variations have on the affected resources and therefore on the ecosystem services associated with the territory. The proposed tools have been shown to be fast and accurate for decision making and their application in other areas can serve as a model for achieving the objectives of the 2030 Agenda.
