Resumen

PIMENTEL, Sabrina; MENDES, Amélia; MASSANO, João  y  PIRES, Francisco. Fisher-Bickerstaff syndrome. Arq Med [online]. 2011, vol.25, n.2, pp.71-73. ISSN 2183-2447.

Fisher syndrome (characterized by ophthalmoplegia, ataxia and areflexia) and Bickerstaff encephalitis (characterized by ophthalmoplegia, ataxia and impaired consciousness) have clinical and pathophysiological features that overlap and may be difficult to distinguish clinically, hence the recent proposal of the term Fisher-Bickerstaff syndrome. An adequate multidisciplinary rehabilitation program is fundamental in this syndrome and it intends to contribute to symptom regression, to prevent complications of the disease and to compensate any functional deficits. it should be initiated early, as soon as the clinical situation allows it. The authors describe a case report of Fisher-Bickerstaff syndrome, discuss its clinical features, course and treatment, and highlight the importance of a close collaboration between Neurology and Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine.

Palabras clave : bickerstaff encephalitis; fisher-bickerstaff syndrome; miller fisher syndrome; rehabilitation.
