AMORIM, Joana Gomes de. Comparative study of Von Langenbeck, Veau-Wardill-Kilner and Furlow palatoplasty techniques. Arq Med [online]. 2014, vol.28, n.2, pp.36-43. ISSN 2183-2447.

The cleft lip and palate is one of the most common congenital malformations and is characterized by an opening on the face and in the oral cavity, affecting structures such as lip, alveolar arcade and palate. In the case of presence cleft palate (with or without cleft lip), palatoplasty is the procedure used to correct the functional and aesthetic limitations resulting from this defect. The objective of this study is to compare the three palatoplasty techniques, taking into account the results obtained regarding the occurrence of complications. It was conducted a literature review using the Medline search engine. Regarding velopharyngeal insufficiency, the Veau-Wardill-Kilner technique showed better results. In the evaluation of the incidence of otitis media, neither study showed was statistically significant results. The techniques of Von Langenbeck and Furlow obtained better results regarding the changes in facial growth and regarding the incidence of oronasal fistula after palatoplasty.
