Allergic diseases are increasing in western countries and they have been associated with dietary changes, especially with increased intake of n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids and reduced intake of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. in this article it will discuss the impact of foods rich in n-3 and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids and fish oil supplementation during pregnancy in the allergic diseases development in the offspring. The studies analyzed in this review suggest that the intake of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids during pregnancy could have a protective effect against the children’s development of allergic diseases, both through fish consumption or supplementation. However, controversies persist and many questions about this issue remain unanswered. Therefore it will be need more studies to allow the definition of recommendations for n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids supplementation in pregnancy.
