Background: Musical auditory cues may improve motor symptoms, cognition and mood associated with Parkinson disease (PD), improving capacity for daily life activities and quality of life. We explored the effect of musical cues associated with physiotherapy in a group of patients with PD in this symptomatology. Methods: This prospective study lasted 12 weeks and included 11 patients randomly assigned to two groups - regular physiotherapy (FR) and physiotherapy combined with musical cues (PM). We assessed the severity of PD one week before the beginning of the sessions (evaluation 1) and one week after the end of the study (evaluation 2) with the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS), Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Timed Up and Go test (TUG), time required to walk 10 meters and number of steps required to walk 10 meters. Results: Our results did not reach statistical significance, yet we observed a tendency for clinical improvement between evaluations 1 and 2 in PM group measured by total UPDRS (PM: median (interquartil range) 52,0 (18,0-79,0) and 50,5 (25,0-72,0), respectively), UPDRS subscale I (PM: 5,0 (3,0-7,0) and 4.5 (3,0-7,0)) and UPDRS subscale II (PM 18.5 (7,0-24,0) and 17,0 (9,0-23,0)). Both groups reduced the timed required for TUG test and the number of steps required to walk 10 meters. Conclusions: The observed tendency to clinical improvement in some characteristics of PM group, along with the fact that physiotherapy associated with musical cues was a safe and cheap strategy, enhances the importance of further investigation in this field, involving more participants for a longer period of time.
