Abstract

VAL-FLORES, Luis et al. A rare case of association between silicosis and systemic lupus erythematosus. Arq Med [online]. 2015, vol.29, n.3, pp.66-68. ISSN 2183-2447.

The hypothesis that silica exposure is associated with autoimmune diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus has been discussed in the last decades. However, few cases of silicosis and lupus have been described in the literature. The authors report the case of a patient in the 3rd decade of life, with history of exposure to silica for 10 years. The patient had clinical features of arthralgia, fever and cough. Performed computed tomography of the chest, that disclosed diffuse interstitial process, centrilobular emphysema, bilateral nodules, hilar and mediastinal calcifications compatible with pulmonary and lymph node silicosis. Autoimmunity was positive for ANA's Anti DNA, low complement, that associated with pericardial and pleural effusion, leukopenia and proteinuria allowed to establish diagnosis of Lupus associated with pulmonary silicosis.

Keywords : silicosis; systemic lupus erythematosus; auto immune diseases.
