Abstract

MAIA, Carlos. Altruism and education: condition, consciousness and dignity. Rev. Port. de Educação [online]. 2006, vol.19, n.2, pp.185-215. ISSN 0871-9187.

The educational act reveals a person’s altruistic structure and dynamism. Individual as well as collective benefit relies on this act on behalf of both unfavoured and favoured people. There is no sense or reason to aiming at surpassing the limitations of the first without maximizing the potentialities of the last. But the effort towards enhancing maximum skills is bigger than the one oriented towards rousing minimum skills. Not to pursue the objective of developing a person’s maximum skills is to deny altruism and to promote an attitude of anthropological, pedagogical and ethical indifference, masked it could be under tolerance.

Keywords : Altruism; Maximization; Dignity; Condition.
