The paper analyses teachers' and experts' discourses about students in Portuguese educational periodicals of the last decades of the XIX^th century. In this sense, it focuses the singularity from the discourses related to the professional identity of the authors. Its possible to identify that the experts writings were founded on a scientificist perspective, which characterized that historical period. On the other hand, the teachers discourses were the expression of a technical knowledge, related to their professional writing practices. Its possible to observe a social hierarchical relationship between the two discourse productions, associated with the relationships between knowledge and power.
