Abstract

SANTOS, Ana Maria Marques  and  DELUIZ, Neise. Popular economy and education: the experience of a waste recycling cooperative in Rio de Janeiro. Rev. Port. de Educação [online]. 2009, vol.22, n.2, pp.159-190. ISSN 0871-9187.

The article analyzes the experiences and practices of a Waste Recycling Cooperative situated in Baixada Fluminense, Rio de Janeiro, focusing on its organization and work relations, on the knowledge that is constituted in work process and the networks of collective action established with the community. The data were obtained through interviews with the cooperative workers, their leadership and the technicians from the NGO Autre Terre, which gives support to the project. The results of the qualitative research illustrate that this popular and solidary economy experience became an alternative for social inclusion, generating work and income, knowledge and values, all under the perspective of a critical popular education. In the relationship between Cooperative and Community collective action networks are established that rescue the public sphere, in which the diversity of ideas and conceptions are explicit, making the exercise of citizenship possible.

Keywords : Solidary economy; Popular education; Social movements; Cooperativism.
