Abstract

LEAL, Telma Ferraz; BRANDAO, Ana Carolina Perrusi; GUERRA, Severina Érika  and  CORREIA, Edla Ferraz. You need to think before writing! Directions given for writing argumentative texts in Brazilian textbooks. Rev. Port. de Educação [online]. 2010, vol.23, n.1, pp.157-181. ISSN 0871-9187.

The aim of this article was to analyze text production activities within seven groups of textbooks (each group containing four books), to investigate the quality of the directions given for the development of children’s argumentative strategies. The results revealed a low investment in this area. In fact many books lacked any proposals that were aimed at such development and the few activities found were usually limited to the production of advertisement genres. In brief, despite the favorable conditions offered for text production, the activities did not stimulate the development of strategies for expressing points of view, integrating justifications or introducing counter-arguments when necessary. In addition, there were no directions that could help the students organize the arguments in the text nor were there any text revision activities to assess the argumentative consistence of the texts.

Keywords : Argumentative texts; Text production; Textbook.
