Abstract

CASANOVA, María Antonia. Educación inclusiva: Por qué y para qué?Inclusive education: why and what for?. Rev. Port. de Educação [online]. 2018, vol.31, n.Especial, pp.42-54. ISSN 0871-9187.  https://doi.org/10.21814/rpe.15078.

The characterisation of the democratic society demands the generalization of the model of inclusive education, to ensure equal opportunities, equity and quality to the whole population within the institutional systems. Respect for difference is one of the peculiarities that distinguishes today's society, so it is essential to promote the contributions that each person can make to the social group. From an ethical, sociological and psycho pedagogical approach, this affirmation is fully justified. If society shall coexist in diversity, this must start in the classroom. The achievement of an inclusive society goes through an education that supports its principles since the first years of life. Furthermore, there are numerous international standards and recommendations that require the practice of inclusive education, highlighting the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (2006), to which the European Union adhered, as did most of its Member States.

Keywords : Inclusive education; democratic society; equal opportunities; equity; accessibility.
