Abstract

DOTTA, Leanete Thomas  and  LOPES, Amélia. The life cycle of teachers and the extension of retirement age: Study perspectives based on a literature review. Rev. Port. de Educação [online]. 2021, vol.34, n.2, pp.86-106.  Epub Aug 02, 2022. ISSN 0871-9187.  https://doi.org/10.21814/rpe.18926.

This article aims to contribute to the enrichment of the body of knowledge concerning the study of teachers at the end of their professional career at a time when this final stage has changed substantially. A literature review was conducted in order to map and relate terminologies, chronologies, geographies and methodologies. In Scopus and Web of Science (WOS) databases, publications between 2000 and 2019 that had as subject population teachers in an advanced phase of their teaching career, that is, over 50 years old and / or over 20 years of experience were considered. Articles that emphasized professional development, professional knowledge, job satisfaction and health, emphases that sometimes correspond to different terminologies, geographies and chronologies, were identified. It's verifiable that, career end being increasingly variable, it becomes necessary that research goes beyond the stated criteria (age and years of experience) in order to discriminate between situations that vary between 50 and 70 years old or between 20 and 45 years of service. This extension will require changes in terminology and a reversion of tendencies within teacher life cycle studies.

Keywords : Teacher aging; teachers’ life cycle; literature review; extension of retirement age..
