Abstract

BASSO, Fabíola de Cássia Reghelin; SOUZA, Luciana Karine de  and  DIAS, Ana Cristina Garcia. Professors and their influence on students’ University adjustment: A qualitative study. Rev. Port. de Educação [online]. 2021, vol.34, n.2, pp.200-215.  Epub Aug 03, 2022. ISSN 0871-9187.  https://doi.org/10.21814/rpe.17731.

University professors directly and indirectly influence students’ adjustment to higher education. This study investigated how professors understand their influence over the process of students’ university adjustment. We interviewed 16 professors from Brazilian public and private universities. A qualitative analysis over the interviews’ transcriptions was conducted with descriptive coding and generation of categories. We organized the categories in three groups: professor-student relationship, professors’ attitudes and dispositions, and professors’ teaching style and didactics. The discussion section provides an interpretation concerning friendship between professor and student, professor empathy, and reflexive practice on teaching. We discuss these topics in the context of professors’ influence over student adjustment to university.
