DE ALENCAR ARNAUT DE TOLEDO, Cézar and AYRES BARBOZA, Marcos. The Benedictines and Education in Portuguese America. Rev. Port. de Educação [online]. 2022, vol.35, n.2, pp.402-418. Epub June 15, 2022. ISSN 0871-9187. https://doi.org/10.21814/rpe.18837.
This research investigates the Benedictine educational practices in their abbeys and stand out the importance of this work developed in the area of the formation for the Brazilian education history. The Benedictines in Portuguese America were great landowners and slaves owners. They relished great prestige and political influence among the villagers and main captaincies leaders. The ties were far beyond the spiritual aspect, some benefactors made preconditions, such as burials in the church chapel, masses, among other requests. To join the Order, the contender was severely evaluated and could not belong to the lower underclass of that society. The Benedictines were also challenged to offer some instruction to their subordinates, in large numbers in the mills and in the maintenance of urban facilities, to support that social structure.
