Abstract

RIOS, Clementina; NEILSON, Alison  and  MENEZES, Isabel. Visions of Environmental Education Educators for Sustainable Development: Between Empowerment and Guidance of Children and Youth. Rev. Port. de Educação [online]. 2023, vol.36, n.1, e23004.  Epub Mar 30, 2023. ISSN 0871-9187.  https://doi.org/10.21814/rpe.22175.

This investigation aims to uncover the views of educators about environmental education for sustainable development (EESD), relating practices and the role of children in promoting environmental citizenship, in order to characterise the implementation of EESD in schools with different environmental programs and pedagogies. A multiple case study was carried out in ecoschools, forest schools, Krishnamurti and Waldorf. The interviews were conducted with EESD educators in preschool and basic education. The results point out differences not only by the pedagogies and programs that guide EESD, but also due to the influence of the geographical and sociocultural context. Environmental sustainability is one of the aspects most worked on by educators, although some focus more on pro-environmental behaviours and others on a concern with self-sustainable ways of life. Another important result is the unconditional love of humans and non-humans, as a relationship that allows the connection with nature.
