Abstract

VARANDAS, Cláudia et al. Non-allergic rhinitis. Rev Port Imunoalergologia [online]. 2022, vol.30, n.4, pp.299-309.  Epub Dec 30, 2022. ISSN 0871-9721.  https://doi.org/10.32932/rpia.2022.12.094.

Non-allergic rhinitis is an inflammatory disorder of the nasal mucosa characterized by the absence of signs of sensitization to inhalant allergens. It includes different subphenotypes, such as vasomotor rhinitis (the most frequent), senile rhinitis, drug-induced rhinitis, gustatory rhinitis, hormonal rhinitis, and atrophic rhinitis. Its pathophysiology is heterogeneous and, despite being a frequent entity, the lack of specific complementary diagnostic tests makes its diagnosis difficult. Its treatment is based on the predominant symptomatology. The aim of this article is to gather current scientific evidence on non-allergic rhinitis, in what concerns its phenotypes, pathophysiology, diagnosis and appropriate management, using clinical vignettes as a starting point.

Keywords : Classification; non-allergic rhinitis; phenotypes; rhinitis; treatment.
