Abstract

NUNES, Inês et al. Local allergic rhinitis. Rev Port Imunoalergologia [online]. 2023, vol.31, n.1, pp.55-63.  Epub Mar 31, 2023. ISSN 0871-9721.  https://doi.org/10.32932/rpia.2023.03.103.

Local allergic rhinitis (LAR) is a phenotype of rhinitischaracterizedd by the occurrence of clinical symptoms of suggestive allergic rhinitis, without evidence of IgE-mediated sensitization on skin prick tests or serum specific IgE quantification. In LAR the production of specific IgE is local and an inflammatory Th2 pattern in the nasal mucosa is present. Since skin prick tests and specific IgE are negative, a nasal allergen challenge with the suspected aeroallergens is required to make the diagnosis.

Similarly, to allergic rhinitis, pharmacological treatment with oral antihistamines and intranasal corticosteroids are the treatment of choice, although their efficacy currently remains to be proven. Allergen specific immunotherapy may be a promising therapeutic approach in LAR.

Keywords : Rhinitis; local allergic rhinitis; nasal allergen challenge; local IgE; allergen immunotherapy.
