FALCAO, Inês; MARQUES, Maria Luís  e  FALCAO, Helena. Chlorhexidine anaphylaxis - A complication after urinary Catheterization. Rev Port Imunoalergologia [online]. 2023, vol.31, n.1, pp.65-70.  Epub 31-Mar-2023. ISSN 0871-9721.  https://doi.org/10.32932/rpia.2023.03.105.

Chlorhexidine (CHX) is an antiseptic with a broad spectrum antibacterial and antifungal activity, having become ubiquitous in healthcare and in the community. The true incidence of CHX hypersensitivity remains unknown, several studies indicate to an incidence between 5,5 to 8,8%. However, recent data point to a growing trend. The authors report the case of a 76-year-old man who, after catheterization with a latex urinary catheter and a lubricant containing CHX, developed anaphylaxis. After evaluation in Immunoallergology consultation, using in vivo and in vitro tests, he was diagnosed with CHX allergy. The objective of this clinical case is to alert the healthcare community to the ubiquity of this antiseptic and how it is sometimes a forgotten and hidden allergen in several peri and postoperative products and therefore should be part of the investigation of anaphylaxis cases in this context.
