Abstract

MARTINS, Vânia  and  LUCIO-VILLEGAS, Emilio. Theatre of the oppressed as a tool for social inclusion in the neighborhood Horta da Areia in Faro. Sociologia [online]. 2014, n.tematico4, pp.57-75. ISSN 0872-3419.

Horta da Areia was an emergency quarter built in Faro to receive Portuguese people forced to return from portuguese colonies in Africa. It prevails until nowadays with evident problems of security, sanity, poverty and social exclusion. The present article exposes some of the main characteristics of the families from the neighborhood. It shows as well a methodology that has been used since 2010 in the social intervention with children and youth: theatre of the oppressed. We try to understand the effects of this approach in a group of young people, reflecting about what results the methodology can bring to the neighborhood inhabitants, having in account the lack of sense of belonging and community

Keywords : social exclusion; ethnicity; theatre of the oppressed.
