Abstract

COSTA, Hermes Augusto. European works councils in the Portuguese context: from obstacles to good practices in the metallurgical sector. Sociologia [online]. 2021, vol.42, pp.5-23.  Epub Feb 20, 2022. ISSN 0872-3419.  https://doi.org/10.21747/08723419/soc42a1.

Almost three decades after the emergence of the European Works Councils (EWCs), obstacles persist to the functioning of that body of information and consultation of workers. After placing the topic within the framework of the Portuguese labour relations system and mapping out some of those obstacles, good practices are mentioned in the light of the metallurgical sector and the Volkswagen EWC. It is argued that, even though it should be looked at carefully, the experiences of good practices are crucial to face uncertainties and reinforce the potential for labour participation in multinationals.

Keywords : European works councils; metallurgical sector; good practices.
